Monolith Registry, a venture backed by global registry services provider Afilias, today announced the beginning of the 30-day “sunrise” period for two new generic top-level domains: “dot VOTE” or .VOTE, and its Spanish/Italian/Portuguese counterpart “dot VOTO” or .VOTO. The sunrise period—from today through February 12—allows eligible trademark holders to register names immediately; registration will be open to all beginning February 17, 2015.
.VOTE and .VOTO are designed to help elected officials, governments, candidates and organizations get information to voters such as candidate materials or voter registration information. Although the domain is unrestricted, registrants must abide by registration policies which require, among other things, that there be an obvious connection between name and the registrant’s activities in the democratic process, and that no deceptive or disparaging names will be registered.
“The new .VOTE and .VOTO top-level domains are designed to provide a positive and respectable environment for voter interaction,” said Roland LaPlante, CMO of Afilias. “Elected officials, candidates and other political participants can register their memorable name while voters will know that the names reflect the philosophy of enhancing the democratic process.”
During the sunrise period which ends on February 12, registration is limited to eligible trademark holders. To apply, please visit a sunrise authorized registrar—see registrar list for .VOTE and .VOTO respectively. Beginning February 17, all individuals or organizations interested may register at any .VOTE or .VOTO authorized registrar.
