Automattic Inc, the parent company of the popular blogging platform WordPress, today announced plans to make the new .blog TLD available for registration this year. Earlier this year, the company secured the rights to oversee and operate the registration of the highly contested new generic TLD.
The company’s subsidiary (Knock Knock Whois There LLC) won the rights in partnership with Primer Nivel, a company established to acquire top-level domains. Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg wrote: “It’s now public that Automattic is the company behind Knock Knock Whois There LLC, the registry for the new .blog TLD. (And a great pun.). We wanted to stay stealth while in the bidding process and afterward in order not to draw too much attention, but nonetheless the cost of the .blog auction got up there (about $19M).” The company beat Google and other contestents in the auction.
From today’s announcement: “For more than a decade, the word ‘blog’ has been synonymous with ‘your home on the web.’ And since 2005, WordPress.com has been proud to help you create a unique space that is all yours. Now we’re excited to announce a brand new way to create a unique identity for your website: .blog, a top-level domain extension that will let you create a customized name and web address for your site.”
