Facebook has announced the construction of a new $220 million (€200 million) data centre in Clonee, County Meath, Ireland. This will be Facebook’s sixth data center worldwide and the company’s second in Europe, after Luleå in Sweden. The Clonee Data Center will be one of the most advanced and energy efficient data centers in the world, remarked Mark Zuckerberg, CEO in a Facebook post. According to the company, the data center in Clonee will be powered by 100 percent renewable energy, based on Ireland’s wind resources. Facebook says its goal is to power 50 percent of its infrastructure with clean and renewable energy by the end of 2018.
