Shopify’s latest financial disclosures indicate that the company may have paid $99 million for the Shop.com domain name, potentially making it the largest publicly reported domain sale on record. The figure appeared in financial documents released November 3, more than a month after Shopify acquired the domain from Market America.
The $99 million figure appears in Shopify’s quarterly financial statements. The company’s Form 10-Q filing for the quarter ended September 30 records $99 million in cash expenditures for the acquisition of intangible assets. The same amount appears in its third-quarter earnings release, compared with no such expenditure in the corresponding quarter of 2025.
Domain industry researcher George Kirikos identified the disclosure and linked the expenditure to Shopify’s purchase of Shop.com. Although the timing and accounting classification support that interpretation, the filing does not explicitly identify Shop.com or establish that the entire $99 million was paid for that domain alone.
The transaction was announced September 28 without a disclosed price. Market America Worldwide confirmed the completed sale as part of a restructuring that moved its online commerce operations to MarketAmerica.com. The company had controlled Shop.com since 2011 and relaunched its principal shopping platform on Shopify’s technology shortly before announcing the transaction.
The purchase price had already attracted attention after domain broker Andrew Rosener reported that Shopify had paid $100 million for the domain alone. Rosener acknowledged that he had not participated in the transaction and had obtained the information indirectly. The newly disclosed $99 million expenditure closely matches that earlier estimate.
A confirmed $99 million domain-only sale would exceed the previous reported record. AI.com changed hands for a reported $70 million earlier in 2026. The Shop.com transaction would surpass that figure by $29 million, or approximately 41%, if the full expenditure is attributable to the domain.
Shop.com now directs visitors to Shopify’s Shop consumer shopping service, giving the company a short, recognizable .com address closely aligned with its existing Shop brand. The acquisition also brings a domain with an established commercial history under Shopify’s control.
While the financial disclosure provides the strongest evidence yet of the transaction’s value, Shopify has not separately identified the domain’s purchase price in its filing.
