ICANN to Shut Down Open Data Platform and API September 1

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) will shut down its Open Data Platform and associated API after August 31, requiring users of the services to change how they access ICANN’s public datasets.

According to an ICANN announcement issued August 27, the Open Data Platform and API will stop operating on September 1. The organization has moved datasets previously available through the platform to its public website, where they can be downloaded as CSV files.

Workflow impact: The change could have a significant impact on researchers, journalists, domain-name registries, cybersecurity specialists and companies that have incorporated ICANN’s API into automated data collection and analysis systems. Users with workflows dependent on the API will need to modify those processes to obtain information from the newly provided files.

While downloadable CSV datasets will preserve access to ICANN data, the transition raises questions about whether static files can fully replace the capabilities and convenience of automated API access. The effects may depend on how frequently individual datasets are updated and how heavily organizations relied on programmatic access.

Notice period: The shutdown also puts attention on the amount of notice provided to organizations with production systems built around the Open Data Platform.

ICANN’s move marks a notable change in how domain-name and internet-governance data will be distributed, with affected users now facing the task of adapting their tools and research workflows before the existing services go offline.
