“EU-U.S. commercial data transfer pact clears final hurdle,” Julia Fioretti today reported in Reuters: “A commercial data transfer pact provisionally agreed by the EU executive and the United States in February received the green light from EU governments on Friday… Its introduction should end months of legal limbo for companies such as Google, Facebook and MasterCard after the EU’s top court struck down the previous data transfer framework, Safe Harbour, on concerns about intrusive U.S. surveillance.”
— Industry group DIGITALEUROPE which represents Apple, Google and IBM, among others, expressed relief at Friday’s vote – John Higgins, director general: “Our members are ready to implement the new framework and meet the compliance challenge that the strengthened provisions demand from companies.”
— UPDATE / “EU-US Privacy Shield agreement goes into effect,” Amar Toor reporting today in The Verge: “The European Commission has formally adopted a new agreement governing the transfer of data between Europe and the United States, more than eight months after the longstanding ‘Safe Harbor’ transfer deal was invalidated amid concerns over US surveillance. ... Under the agreement, US companies will have to self-certify that they meet higher data protection standards, and the US Department of Commerce will be charged with conducting ‘regular reviews’ to ensure compliance.”
