MarkMonitor today released its latest issue of the New gTLD Quarterly Report for the second quarter of 2020, including a particular focus on registration trends during the pandemic.
As COVID-19 makes its mark across the globe, businesses adapt to new behaviors across the domain landscape. Taking this new environment into account, MarkMonitor analysts reviewed the registration counts of selected new gTLDs towards the beginning of the pandemic (February 19) and then again 90 days later (May 19). In doing so, the team found some interesting results.
As stay-home orders limited individuals’ ability to go out to public places and engage in hospitality activities like visiting restaurants, MarkMonitor analysts found a correlation in the increase in domain registrations of topically relevant TLDs. For instance, with delivery being the only mode of food service allowed in many places, it seems logical that there has been more interest in businesses or individuals buying domain names that include TLDs such as .DELIVERY or .MENU.
