In a blog post by Google's Sitaram Iyer, Staff Software Engineer, and Matt Cutts, Principal Engineer, a "secret project" has been revealed in an effort where the company is aiming to enhance various key aspects of its web search technology including indexing speed, accuracy, and comprehensiveness. The company so far has released the new engine "under the hood," for testing and feedback only and says most users will not notice a difference in search results. more

FCC Launched Investigation Into Exclusive Handset Deals

Grant Gross of IDG News report: "The U.S. Federal Communications Commission will launch an investigation into exclusive handset deals between mobile carriers and handset makers, acting FCC Chairman Michael Copps said. Copps has instructed FCC staff to open an inquiry into exclusive handset deals, he said during a speech at the Pike and Fischer Broadband Summit Thursday." more

Twitter Reschedules Critical Maintenance to Avoid Down Time for Demonstrators in Iran

cores of Twitter users around the world thanked the social networking site, Twitter, today for its decision to postpone a scheduled maintenance which would take the service down for 90 minutes tonight at around 9:45 pm PST. Twitter has become a lifeline for Iranian demonstrators as the microblogging service is providing a vital means of communication amongst protesters as well as the outside world. In response to a large number of users on Twitter pleading the company to reconsider the timing of its scheduled maintenance -- given the sensitive timing in the Iran -- Twitter decided to reschedule the maintenance to a later time. more

New Top-Level Domains Shaking the Main Established Registrars, AFNIC Reports

Four of the top ten registrars in the world are not part of the nTLD, says AFNIC in a report released this month. More agile challengers are taking advantage of this situation. "Over and above these methodological considerations, one certain conclusion is that the cards are being reshuffled between the stakeholders. 'Challengers' are arriving thanks to nTLDs, while some incumbents seem slower in taking advantage of these new, still-emerging markets with their 2 million registered domain names compared with a world total of 276 million." more

FCC Updates Broadband Speed Standard, Aims for Nationwide High-Speed Internet Acces

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has updated the national broadband speed standard to at least 100Mbps download and 20Mbps upload speeds, marking the first adjustment since January 2015. more

Michael Berkens reporting in TheDomains.com blog reports: National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) is an organization whose members include Secretaries of State and Lieutenant Governors of the 50 U.S. states and territories send a letter to ICANN in late July that was just published today, that the new gTLD's .INC, .LLC, .CORP and .LLP.should only be allowed to be registered by 'entities that are appropriately registered and in good-standing with the Secretary of State or other appropriate state agency." more
