Internet Society Expresses Concern over Direction of WCIT

In light of final developments during the WCIT meetings, the following statement was released from the CEO and President of Internet Society, Lynn St. Amour on Wednesday, December 12, 2012: "At the conclusion of today's plenary, the Internet Society is concerned about the direction that the ITR'S are taking with regards to the Internet. The Internet Society came to this meeting in the hopes that revisions to the treaty would focus on competition, liberalization, free flow of information and independent regulation..." more

Internet Cut Off Across Syria Amidst Tense Fighting

Internet monitoring companies say Syria's Internet connectivity has been shutdown nationwide. Renesys, a U.S.-based network security firm that studies Internet disruptions, reports that about 6 hours ago (12:26pm in Damascus) Syria's international Internet connectivity was shut down. "In the global routing table, all 84 of Syria's IP address blocks have become unreachable, effectively removing the country from the Internet." Akamai Technologies Inc. has also confirmed the complete outage in Syria. more

SANS Develops Small-Scale City to Train Cyber Warriors

SANS has announced NetWars CyberCity, a small-scale city located close by the New Jersey Turnpike complete with a bank, hospital, water tower, train system, electric power grid, and a coffee shop. NetWars CyberCity was developed to teach cyber warriors from the U.S. Military how online actions can have kinetic effects. more

Google Says ITU Is the Wrong Place to Make Future Internet Decisions

Google has launched a "Take Action" page to urge people to speak out amidst the gathering of the UN's International Telecommunications Union (ITU) taking place next month in Dubai to update global telecom rules for the first time since 1988. Google and others have raised concern as some countries may see this as an opportunity to set up new rules for the internet. more

ICANN Board Starts New Initiative to Tackle gTLD Registration Data Challenges

The ICANN Board of Directors has directed the Chief Executive Officer to launch a new effort to re-examine the purpose of collecting, maintaining and providing access to generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) registration data. The move follows the recommendations of a review team that examined implementation of WHOIS data policy. more

Report Reveals Planned DNSSEC Adoption of 2010 by Key Industries Still in Limbo

A recent progress report on DNSSEC adoption reveals the extent to which organizations in a number of industries are falling short of their own objectives for making Domain Name Server (DNS) infrastructure more secure. The progress report, conducted by Secure64 Software Corporation, is a follow-up to a 2010 study by Forrester Research titled, "DNSSEC Ready for Prime Time," which reported on organizations' plans to implement DNSSEC in order to shore up vulnerabilities in DNS. more

Akamai Reports 460 Times Increase in IPv6 Requests Over Its Platform Since Last Year

In its latest State of the Internet report, Akamai has highlighted industry numbers showing imminent global exhaustion of IPv4 addresses. Report has also identifies 460 times increase in IPv6 requests over Akamai's platform from June 2011 – June 2012. A fair amount of the IPv6 request growth is attributed to the "World IPv6 Launch" event held on Jun 6, 2012 organized by the Internet Society. more
