Cable Faults Cut Vietnam’s International Internet Capacity by 30%

Vietnam is facing significant disruption to its international internet connectivity after faults affected four submarine cable systems serving the country: SJC2, AAE-1, Asia America Gateway (AAG) and Intra-Asia (IA).

Capacity loss: Before reports of the fourth fault emerged, Tuổi Trẻ News reported on August 27 that problems affecting SJC2, AAE-1 and AAG had reduced Vietnam’s total international internet capacity by about 30%, citing preliminary estimates from several telecom operators. The newspaper said providers had activated contingency measures and were rerouting traffic through unaffected submarine cables and terrestrial networks.

Repair status: SJC2 reportedly suffered a failure near Chung Hom Kok in Hong Kong, while AAE-1 experienced a separate connectivity failure. Repair work is also pending or underway on other affected routes, although schedules vary by cable and remain dependent on factors including specialized repair-vessel availability and weather conditions.

Timeline uncertainty: Reports differ on when some of the individual failures occurred and on repair schedules, leaving the precise sequence and current status of the outages unclear pending confirmation from cable operators and consortium representatives.

The simultaneous problems highlight the vulnerability of Vietnam’s international communications infrastructure even as the country expands its submarine cable capacity. Multiple cable failures can place greater pressure on remaining routes and expose limits in redundancy when repairs cannot be completed quickly.

Traffic rerouting: Vietnamese internet providers are redirecting international traffic across unaffected submarine and terrestrial connections to maintain service. The key question is whether those alternative routes can provide sufficient capacity until repairs are completed, particularly during peak periods when users accessing overseas services may experience slower speeds and higher latency.
