Over the past decade, cloud computing has experienced explosive growth, evolving from its nascent stage to widespread adoption and fundamentally changing how businesses and individuals use information technology. At the same time, traditional on-premise computing, while still having its use cases, has been progressively integrated with, and often even controlled by, Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) in many aspects. This historical trajectory might offer clues for understanding the future relationship between the currently hot topics of edge AI and cloud AI.
Looking back at cloud computing’s rise, its core advantages lay in elastic scalability, cost-effectiveness, and centralized management. Businesses no longer needed to pour vast capital into building and maintaining data centers, instead leasing cloud resources on demand. While on-premise computing offered greater customization and data control, its high costs for maintenance, upgrades, and initial investment led to its gradual decline in many non-specific applications.
Ultimately, even on-premise computing often needed to be compatible with cloud services to unlock its full value. For example, many companies’ hybrid cloud architectures still rely on tools from cloud service providers to uniformly manage both on-premise and cloud resources. This meant cloud giants not only provided cloud services but also indirectly gained control over many core tools and standards within the on-premise computing environment.
The AI landscape is currently undergoing a similar evolution. Cloud AI, with its powerful computing capabilities and data storage advantages, has become a fertile ground for AI model training and the development of large language models (LLMs). Its infinitely scalable resources make training complex models possible and provide a comprehensive suite of AI development tools and services.

For applications demanding low latency, high privacy, or offline operation—such as autonomous driving, industrial IoT, and smart healthcare—transmitting data to the cloud and back is clearly not ideal. This is precisely where Edge AI shines. By processing data directly at the source, Edge AI effectively resolves latency and bandwidth issues while also better protecting data privacy.
While Edge AI’s emergence brings many opportunities for application innovation, it also faces challenges like hardware resource limitations and the complexity of model updates and management.
Considering the development trajectories of both cloud computing and AI, it’s highly probable that Edge AI will ultimately move towards deep integration with Cloud AI, forming a “Cloud-Edge Collaboration” ecosystem.
