Global registry services provider Afilias today announced the beginning of the one-month “sunrise” period for the top-level domain (TLD) dedicated to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community: dot LGBT or .LGBT. The sunrise period allows trademark holders to register names immediately; after which registration will be open to all LGBT community members and those serving it beginning February 10, 2015.
With “LGBT” being most preferred term by the community, the .LGBT web address naturally appeals to this audience. Businesses, organizations and other entities with a .LGBT address will stand out and their intention to connect with the community will immediately get recognized.
“Since our launch announcement in December, the .LGBT domain has created excitement and interest among many—from media to businesses, employers, and across the LGBT community,” said Roland LaPlante, CMO of Afilias. “.LGBT has emerged as one of the most anticipated launches among all new TLDs!”
As the first and only dedicated space for the LGBT community, the .LGBT domain also has an acceptable-use policy that protects the community from possible misuse.
During the sunrise period—ending on February 4, 2015—registration is limited to eligible trademark holders. To apply, please visit a sunrise authorized registrar. Beginning February 10, all individuals or organizations interested may register at any .LGBT authorized registrar.
